Key Historical Inquiries & Context

Bi Sheng (c. 990–1051), a commoner artisan from Qishui, Qizhou (modern Yingshan, Hubei), was the inventor of movable type printing—one of Ancient China's Four Great Inventions. Mastering traditional woodblock engraving, he recognized the fatal bottlenecks of static timber blocks. During the Qingli reign (1041–1048) in Hangzhou, he pioneered kiln-fired ceramic movable type, combined with reusable resin-coated iron plates and an alternating dual-plate workflow, launching the world's first modular typography system four centuries before Johannes Gutenberg. His craft was meticulously recorded by polymath Shen Kuo in the Dream Pool Essays, and physically confirmed by the 1990 discovery of his 1052 CE tombstone in Hubei.

In his early twenties, seeking to master the craft of book engraving, Bi Sheng traveled down the Yangtze River to Huangzhou.

“Carving characters into sticky clay as thin as the rim of a coin, each character forming a single seal, then baking them in fire until hard.”

(Yòng jiāoní kè zì, bó rú qiánchún, měi zì wéi yí yìn, huǒ shāo lìng jiān.)
  2. Huangzhou Yangtze Port (黄州学艺)

    Age 22

Modern-day analog: Major Yangtze river commercial port and publishing crossroads, modern Huanggang, Hubei

Starting as a woodblock carving apprentice in regional commercial print shops along the Yangtze, mastering the fundamentals of typography, ink, and paper.

At the busy Yangtze port of Huangzhou, young Bi Sheng bent over his bench carving woodblocks. Amid falling shavings, he honed his chisel skills and inking techniques, rising to become an accomplished master carver.

Around 1023, drawn by the booming publishing houses of Jiangnan, Bi Sheng relocated east to Hangzhou.

“For printing merely two or three copies, it offered no simple advantage; but for printing dozens, hundreds, or thousands of volumes, it was astonishingly swift.”

(Ruò zhǐ yìn sān èr běn, wèi wéi jiǎnyì; ruò yìn shù shí bǎi qiān běn, zé jíwéi shénsù.)
  3. Hangzhou Printing Houses (钱塘名工)

During the Tiansheng era, Hangzhou was filled with bustling bookshops and fragrant ink. In his thirties, Bi Sheng flourished here, his elegant calligraphy and crisp carving winning renown throughout the city's printing trade.

Yet amid endless days of carving wooden blocks, the severe limitations of static timber troubled his mind.

“During the Qingli reign, a commoner named Bi Sheng invented movable type.”

(Qìnglì zhōng, yǒu bùyī Bì Shēng, yòu wéi huóbǎn.)
  4. Hangzhou Woodblock Workshop (雕版困局)

    Age 42

Modern-day analog: Bustling publishing workshops grappling with woodblock storage and decay, modern Hangzhou, Zhejiang

Confronting the structural flaws of woodblock printing—warping, rot, and high cost—vowing to break the static block bottleneck.

Surrounded by stacks of warped, decaying woodblocks in the workshop, Bi Sheng felt the heavy burden of traditional printing. One misplaced stroke ruined a whole page; a single book consumed years. Under his lamp, he resolved to tear down this ancient obstacle.

Around 1039, to survey empire-wide demand for books, Bi Sheng traveled north to the imperial capital Kaifeng.

“Wood grain has uneven density; upon absorbing water it swells unevenly, and it sticks to the adhesive paste; hence it is unsuitable. Nothing compares to baked ceramic clay.”

(Mùlǐ yǒu shūmì, zhān shuǐ zé gāoxià bùpíng, jiān yǔ yào xiāng zhān, bùkě qǔ; bùruò fántǔ.)

Achieving the historic breakthrough in the Qingli reign: inventing baked clay movable type and thermal resin plates.

During the Qingli era, the kiln fire burned through the night in Hangzhou. In his fifties, Bi Sheng cradled newly fired ceramic types, their surfaces level as a whetstone. The world's first clay movable type printed page was born in fragrant ink.

Having proven the concept, Bi Sheng engineered an alternating dual-plate pipeline and modular rhyme-case storage.

“First set an iron plate, coated with a mixture of pine resin, wax, and paper ash. To print, place an iron frame over the plate, then densely arrange the type characters within it.”

(Xiān shè yì tiěbǎn, qí shàng yǐ sōngzhī, là hé zhǐhuī zhī lèi mào zhī. Yù yìn, zé yǐ yì tiěfàn zhì tiěbǎn shàng, nǎi mì bù zì yìn.)

In the orderly Hangzhou typography shop, twin iron plates alternated like clockwork. Bi Sheng's fingers moved swiftly across phonetic rhyme cases, retrieving and setting types in moments, proving the extraordinary efficiency of modular printing.

In his later years, Bi Sheng entrusted his prized ceramic types to the clan of polymath Shen Kuo, ensuring his invention would endure.

“For every character there were multiple types—for common words like 'zhi' and 'ye', over twenty types each, in case of repetition. When not in use, they were labeled with paper slips, one slip per rhyme category, and stored in wooden cases.”

Ceramic types treasured across generations by Shen Kuo's family, inspiring the immortal account in Dream Pool Essays.

At Dream Brook in Runzhou, the precious ceramic types were lovingly preserved by Shen Kuo's family. A gentle flame melted the paste, leaving the type completely clean. Shen Kuo inspected these masterpieces, immortalizing Bi Sheng's name in Chinese history.

During the Huangyou reign, master Bi Sheng returned home to rest in his native Dabie Mountains.

“When finished, heat it again to melt the paste; brush it with the hand, and the type falls away cleanly without the slightest stain. After Sheng passed away, his type came into the possession of my cousins and nephews, who treasure it to this day.”

(Yòng qì zài huǒ lìng yào róng, yǐ shǒu fú zhī, qí yìn zì luò, shū bù zhānwū. Shēng sǐ, qí yìn wéi yú qúncóng suǒ dé, zhìjīn bǎocáng.)
