- The Crow Terrace Poetry Trial (1079) charged Su Shi with using verse to criticize policy.
- It is a landmark case of literary speech colliding with factional politics.
- Prison poems from this period show fear, irony, and unbroken craft.
- The episode foreshadows later Chinese debates on censorship and literati conscience.
How a Poem Becomes a Crime
The Song dynasty was at war with itself. Since the 1060s, the court had been split between reformers — led by the brilliant chancellor Wang Anshi — and conservatives who wanted the old system restored. Su Shi belonged to neither camp: he criticized the reformers' radical laws when they hurt ordinary farmers, but later refused to support the conservatives' total repeal either. In a polarized era, standing in the middle means making enemies on both sides. His enemies found their weapon in his own words.
Starting in 1079, prosecutors began collecting Su Shi's published poems — dozens of them — and reading every line as a coded attack: a poem about 'bitter rain ruining the harvest' became a mockery of the government; a verse about trees 'pruned by frost' became a threat against the court. The accusations were compiled into a dossier and presented to the emperor. Official order: arrest Su Shi and bring him to the capital in chains.
103 Days on Death Row
One night, imperial secret police burst into Su Shi's official residence in Huzhou. As his family wept, he was dragged out in chains and escorted back to Kaifeng in a prisoner's cart — the same route he had once traveled in triumph after passing the imperial examination. In the capital, he was thrown into the Celestial Court Prison (Yushitai), called the 'Crow Terrace' because of the crows that nested in its trees. For 103 days he was interrogated about his own metaphors.
The interrogation was brutal, designed to break him. Convinced he would be executed, Su Shi did what the condemned do: he wrote his farewell letters — then a set of farewell poems to his younger brother Su Zhe, the person he loved most in the world.
Yǔ jūn shìshì wéi xiōngdì, gèng jié láishēng wèiliǎo yīn.
May we remain brothers through every lifetime, renewing this unfinished bond in ages to come.

Saved by His Political Enemy
The trial divided the empire. Many petitioned for his life, but the unexpected turning point came from the man whose policies Su Shi had most criticized: Wang Anshi himself. The great reformer, then retired in the south, sent word to the capital: 'In a great age, how can we kill a talented man?' Other voices, including the Empress Dowager, joined in. The emperor commuted the death sentence. Su Shi was exiled — not executed — to Huangzhou, stripped of rank, under surveillance, with no salary. Out of that prison sentence would come the Eastern Slope, Dongpo Pork, the Red Cliff Odes, and the most celebrated resilience poetry in Chinese civilization.
Was the Crow Terrace Trial really about poetry?
Yes and no. The official charge was that Su Shi's poems slandered the court. But the deeper cause was politics: his refusal to take sides in the reform wars made him a target for both camps. His enemies used poetry as the weapon because poems were public, easily quoted out of context, and impossible to prove innocent.
How many days was Su Shi in prison?
103 days. He was arrested in Huzhou in late 1079, escorted to the capital, and remained imprisoned in the Yushitai (Crow Terrace) until his sentence was commuted. He was 42 years old.
Did the trial end Chinese poets writing about politics?
No — the opposite. The trial terrified some, but it also became a rallying symbol. Su Shi himself kept writing (more carefully for a while), and the case is still studied today as the most famous example of literary censorship in pre-modern Chinese history — and a warning about how metaphor can be weaponized.
Why was Su Shi exiled after the Crow Terrace Poetry Case?
The death sentence was commuted. Song law discouraged executing scholar-officials, and even his rival Wang Anshi argued against killing him. In 1080 he was stripped of rank and banished to Huangzhou under surveillance with no salary — the first of three exiles (Huangzhou, Huizhou, Danzhou).
